The film focuses on the different Arabian golden ages.  The first takes a look at the earliest tribes who developed Frankincense to sell to the Romans and Greeks.  The film travels to the lost city of Madain Saleh with its ancient tombs and amazing carved buildings built right out of the mountains.  The next golden age was built more around knowledge than wealth.  The Arabic scholars had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and helped ultimately inspire Europe and their Renaissance.  With the discovery of oil, the region is moving into another golden age with renewed focus on learning and a modernization of their cities.

The film also provides some contrasts of the region as it travels deep into the Red Sea to explore ancient shipwrecks and through the desert with a wild sandstorm.  One of the most amazing scenes is a look at one of the religious pilgrimages to the region with one of the largest single human gatherings on Earth. 

The DVD is narrated by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and really provides a deeper understanding of the culture and region.  Even with the DVD format, the images from the film are clear and bright.  Although in a few places the film looks a little distorted as the images were more likely better spread out on an IMAX screen.  The sound is clear and consistent throughout the movie and the dialog helps add a lot to the images portrayed.  There are also a few animated images of maps to help better explain the history, which really adds to the film.

There are also three special features on the DVD.  The first is a Making of Documentary, which provides an interesting look into the challenges that went into the filmmaking.  It is neat to see the behind the scenes look at what it takes to make a nature film.  The second is a short retrospective of the MacGillivray Freeman Company and the films they make.  The third includes several trailers of upcoming films from this company.

Purification of the Heart, as its title states, is a course on the vessel of human spirituality, character, and morality -- the heart. Muslim scholars throughout history have written extensively on this topic, as prompted by the well-known statements of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and verses of the Quran. In essence, Purification of the Heart is a course on the "Greater Jihad" -- as it has been called by illustrious learned men and women of Islamic civilization -- our struggle to become better human beings, luminaries of faith and morality.

This present text is based on the poem known as Matharat al-Qulub (literally, Purification of the Hearts), which offers a means by which purification can be achieved. It was written by a great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad Mawlud al-Ya'qubi al-Musawi al-Muratani. As his name indicates, he was from Mauritania in West Africa. He was a brilliant scholar who mastered all of the Islamic sciences, including the inward sciences of the soul. The spiritual diseases of the heart addressed in this volume include: miserliness, wantonness, hatred, iniquity, envy, ostentation, vanity, fraud, and more. Imam Mawlud directs his attention to each of these diseases, discusses their causes, and offers cures. His teachings imply that purification is a life-long process, not something that is applied once and then forgotten. Purity of heart never survives a passive relationship. Rather, it requires constant consideration. This book hopes to introduce to readers how that is done.

The Prophet spoke about the heart in a manner that leads one to believe that its corruption means disaster for the soul and our happiness. "Purification" is not a state per se, as you will soon hear, but is a process and always so. It is called the "Greater Jihad" because the struggle never ends, so long as we live in this world. Our faith depends on winning this struggle, as does the kind of life we will meet in the Hereafter.

Covetousness, the desire to aggress and exploit, the longing to pilfer natural resources, the inordinate love of wealth, and other maladies are manifestations of diseases found nowhere but in the heart. We of the modern world are reluctant to ask ourselves—when we look at the terrible things happening—“Why do they occur?” And if we ask that with sincerity, the answer will come back in no uncertain terms: all of this is from our own selves. ABOUT HAMZA YUSUF

Hamza Yusuf Hanson was born in Washington State and raised in Northern California. After exploring religions at an early age, he converted to Islam at 18 and set out on a journey that would take him to places of study in England, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, and finally West Africa where he spent a transformative period with Murabit al-Hajj, a master of the inner and outer sciences of Islam. After a sojourn of ten years abroad, Hamza Yusuf returned to the U.S. and took degrees in Nursing and Religious Studies. In 1998, he co-founded the Zaytuna Institute in order to teach the traditional sciences of Islam to people in the West. Al-Ghazali on Love, Longing, Intimacy & Contentment is a translation of the thirty-sixth chapter of ‘The Revival of the Religious Sciences’ (Ihya’ Ulum al-Din). This chapter falls in the last of the four sections of the Ihya, the section dealing with the virtues or what is conducive to salvation. This work was of radical importance to the history of Sufism and the arguments that al-Ghazali sets out in it formed the basis of the development of whole schools of Sufi theory and practice of mystical love, including the extensive Sufi poetry of Rumi and Hafiz. The text starts by elucidating the love of God for humanity and the love of man for God, and proceeds to discuss the deepening of this love to include different degrees of longing, intimacy and contentment.

Al-Ghazali on Patience and Thankfulness is a translation of the thirty-second chapter of The Revival of the Religions Sciences (Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din). This chapter fills in the last of the four sections of the Ihya’, the section dealing with the virtues or what is conducive to salvation. Ghazali here presents definitions for patience and its different forms; the need for patience; the degrees of patience; and why patience is considered to be half of faith. The second part of this chapter deals with thankfulness and again Ghazali gives us definitions for thankfulness, its nature and its blessings.
