The film also provides some contrasts of the region as it travels deep into the Red Sea to explore ancient shipwrecks and through the desert with a wild sandstorm. One of the most amazing scenes is a look at one of the religious pilgrimages to the region with one of the largest single human gatherings on Earth.

The DVD is narrated by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren and really provides a deeper understanding of the culture and region. Even with the DVD format, the images from the film are clear and bright. Although in a few places the film looks a little distorted as the images were more likely better spread out on an IMAX screen. The sound is clear and consistent throughout the movie and the dialog helps add a lot to the images portrayed. There are also a few animated images of maps to help better explain the history, which really adds to the film.

There are also three special features on the DVD. The first is a Making of Documentary, which provides an interesting look into the challenges that went into the filmmaking. It is neat to see the behind the scenes look at what it takes to make a nature film. The second is a short retrospective of the MacGillivray Freeman Company and the films they make. The third includes several trailers of upcoming films from this company.

To them, these coverings seemed irrelevant to both modern life and Islamic piety. Today, however, the majority of Muslim women throughout the Islamic world again wear the veil. Why, Ahmed asks, did this change take root so swiftly, and what does this shift mean for women, Islam, and the West?

When she began her study, Ahmed assumed that the veil's return indicated a backward step for Muslim women worldwide. What she discovered, however, in the stories of British colonial officials, young Muslim feminists, Arab nationalists, pious Islamic daughters, American Muslim immigrants, violent jihadists, and peaceful Islamic activists, confounded her expectations. Ahmed observed that Islamism, with its commitments to activism in the service of the poor and in pursuit of social justice, is the strain of Islam most easily and naturally merging with western democracies' own tradition of activism in the cause of justice and social change. It is often Islamists, even more than secular Muslims, who are at the forefront of such contemporary activist struggles as civil rights and women's rights. Ahmed's surprising conclusions represent a near reversal of her thinking on this topic.

Richly insightful, intricately drawn, and passionately argued, this absorbing story of the veil's resurgence, from Egypt through Saudi Arabia and into the West, suggests a dramatically new portrait of contemporary Islam.

Here we meet two women who embodied the spirit of faith and courage during the Prophet's time: Nusaybah Bint Ka'ab (Umm Amarah) Al-Ansariyyah and Asma' Bint Abi Bakr As-Siddiq. Their stories are examples of the empowering quality of the message of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.), as we witness their bravery in the face of the ruling Quraysh through their unwavering dedication to the young faith. Their stories serve to demonstrate that every person has a role to play in forming a good and just society, and that no effort is too small, no heart too weak (or old, or corrupt!), and no task too daunting.

Purification of the Heart, as its title states, is a course on the vessel of human spirituality, character, and morality -- the heart. The suffering and problems that we confront in our lives on a personal and even global level actually come down to the condition of the heart. Muslim scholars throughout history have written extensively on this topic, as prompted by the well-known statements of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and verses of the Quran. In essence, Purification of the Heart is a course on the "Greater Jihad" -- as it has been called by illustrious learned men and women of Islamic civilization -- our struggle to become better human beings, luminaries of faith and morality.

This present text is based on the poem known as Matharat al-Qulub (literally, Purification of the Hearts), which offers a means by which purification can be achieved. It was written by a great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad Mawlud al-Ya'qubi al-Musawi al-Muratani. As his name indicates, he was from Mauritania in West Africa. He was a brilliant scholar who mastered all of the Islamic sciences, including the inward sciences of the soul. The spiritual diseases of the heart addressed in this volume include: miserliness, wantonness, hatred, iniquity, envy, ostentation, vanity, fraud, and more. Imam Mawlud directs his attention to each of these diseases, discusses their causes, and offers cures. His teachings imply that purification is a life-long process, not something that is applied once and then forgotten. Purity of heart never survives a passive relationship. Rather, it requires constant consideration. This book hopes to introduce to readers how that is done.

The Prophet spoke about the heart in a manner that leads one to believe that its corruption means disaster for the soul and our happiness. "Purification" is not a state per se, as you will soon hear, but is a process and always so. It is called the "Greater Jihad" because the struggle never ends, so long as we live in this world. Our faith depends on winning this struggle, as does the kind of life we will meet in the Hereafter.

"If we examine the trials and tribulations all over earth, we’ll find they are rooted in human hearts. Covetousness, the desire to aggress and exploit, the longing to pilfer natural resources, the inordinate love of wealth, and other maladies are manifestations of diseases found nowhere but in the heart. Every criminal, miser, abuser, scoffer, embezzler, and hateful person does what he or she does because of a diseased heart. So if you want to change our world, do not begin by rectifying the outward. Instead, change the condition of the inward. It is from the unseen world that the phenomenal world emerges, and it is from the unseen realm of our hearts that all actions spring. . . . We of the modern world are reluctant to ask ourselves—when we look at the terrible things happening—“Why do they occur?” And if we ask that with sincerity, the answer will come back in no uncertain terms: all of this is from our own selves. In so many ways, we have brought this upon ourselves. This is the only empowering position that we can take."
— Excerpted from Hamza Yusuf’s Introduction

ABOUT HAMZA YUSUF

Hamza Yusuf Hanson was born in Washington State and raised in Northern California. After exploring religions at an early age, he converted to Islam at 18 and set out on a journey that would take him to places of study in England, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Algeria, and finally West Africa where he spent a transformative period with Murabit al-Hajj, a master of the inner and outer sciences of Islam. After a sojourn of ten years abroad, Hamza Yusuf returned to the U.S. and took degrees in Nursing and Religious Studies. In 1998, he co-founded the Zaytuna Institute in order to teach the traditional sciences of Islam to people in the West. He is recognized today as one of the most influential voices for Islam in the West and has advised several world leaders including the President of the United States and the head of the Arab League. Yusuf resides in Northern California with his wife and children.

In an age of bewildering spiritual and intellectual confusion, creed has never been more important.

Every Muslim is obliged to learn it and is promised protection from deviant beliefs by following the unassailable texts of the scholastic community of Islam. Of them all, The Creed of Imam al-Tahawi is the simplest, the most effective, and the least controversial. It serves as a sound basis for Islamic faith and is the most reliable of the early articulations of Muslim belief. Because Imam al-Tahawi avoided involuted theological issues and systematically presented the most fundamental aspects of dogmatic theology, his creed has achieved an unusual degree of acceptance in the Muslim milieu. In the thousand years since it was written, many great Muslim scholars have penned commentaries on it. It is still studied throughout the Muslim world and increasingly in the West.

Widely acclaimed and respected for accurately reflecting Arabic meanings, it has received recommendations by numerous well-known scholars, including Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh al-Munajjid, Dr. Zakir Naik, Sheikh Yusuf Estes, Dr. Bilal Philips and Dr. Jamal Badawi.

Sheik Yusuf Estes, Director of www.ShareIslam.com

At last we have something presenting the meanings of Allah’s Message to the world in simple English terms, while at the same time representing the style and structure of the way the Qur’an presents the language of Arabic. Students of Arabic are amazed at how close the style of Saheeh International’s translation demonstrates the way the actual Arabic compares to the English translation. The translator makes it easy for the students of knowledge to better comprehend and understand the style and the meanings of the Holy Qur’an.

Dr. Zakir Naik, President, Islamic Research Foundation

There are several English translations of the meaning of the glorious Qur’an but alhamdulillah, the English meaning of the translation… by Saheeh International and published by Al-Muntada Al-Islami is one of the best available in the world today.

The English meaning of the glorious Qur’an by Saheeh International is one of the most authentic and correct… The English translation is simple yet accurate and at the same time modern… Its exhaustive subject index at the end is very helpful.

Dr. Jamal Badawi, Canada

Its English flows much better than other English translations. In addition, the translation projects a better understanding of the Qur’an and Islamic teaching. I highly recommend [it].

Who is Allaah and why do Muslims believe in Him?

What are His attributes?

What does Islam say about angels and Satan?

How do the Muslims view the Torah and the Bible?

What is the Qur-aan? What do Muslims claim about the Qur-aan and on what basis?

Is it possible that the Qur-aan is the Word of God?

How is the Islamic concept about prophets different from the Biblical concept?

What do Muslims say about Jesus? On what basis?

Who was Muhammad? Why is he so revered?

Did the old Scriptures have anything to say about Muhammad?

Do Muslims believe in predestination?

Exploring the Islamic Beliefs answers such questions and provides insight into the belief system of a billion-plus Muslims of the world who live in every country, are found in all ethnic communities and speak all languages.

It is claimed that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. An interesting aspect of inter-religion conversion is that the conversion away from Islam is mostly undertaken by uneducated, ignorant Muslims; while conversion to Islam is understaken by the well-educated intellgentsia of other religions. What is it in Islam that is attracting educated, professional and intelligent people to it?

This book provides you an opportunity to discover the Islamic faith for yourself and form your own opinion about it.

This chapter falls in the last of the four sections of the Ihya, the section dealing with the virtues or what is conducive to salvation. This work was of radical importance to the history of Sufism and the arguments that al-Ghazali sets out in it formed the basis of the development of whole schools of Sufi theory and practice of mystical love, including the extensive Sufi poetry of Rumi and Hafiz. The text starts by elucidating the love of God for humanity and the love of man for God, and proceeds to discuss the deepening of this love to include different degrees of longing, intimacy and contentment.

This chapter fills in the last of the four sections of the Ihya’, the section dealing with the virtues or what is conducive to salvation. Ghazali here presents definitions for patience and its different forms; the need for patience; the degrees of patience; and why patience is considered to be half of faith. The second part of this chapter deals with thankfulness and again Ghazali gives us definitions for thankfulness, its nature and its blessings. In addition to the translation, Dr Henry Littlejohn provides an extensive introduction which illustrates the importance of the topics of patience and thankfulness in Islam throughout the centuries.

With an emphasis on Taqwa (God-consciousness) and Ikhlas (sincerity), Agenda To Change Our Condition is an indispensable handbook for all Muslims striving for excellence in character and self-refinement. Topics covered include: Taqwa: Its Definition and Its Benefits, The Heart and its Treatment, Practical Steps to Change Our Condition, a series of exercises for achieving Taqwa as well as three new appendices.

In this updated for 2008 new edition of "Agenda to Change Our Condition," Shaykh Hamza Yusuf chalks out a program for all Muslims who want to rectify their current state of apathy and heedlessness of Allah's commands. The book includes sections on Practical Steps to Change Our Condition, Taqwa: Its Definition and its Benefits, The Heart and its Treatment (by Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-`Arabi), culminating with a series of exercises on how to attain taqwa.

"Our hope is that you take this manual seriously. It is rooted in the Book, the Sunnah, and the example of our pious predecessors. We hope that you will commit to implementing it to the best of your ability, that you find a group of brothers or sisters, whichever the case may be, and work together: 'A believer is given strength through his brother,' according to the Prophetic tradition. "Finally, the way out of the spider's web in which we are all trapped that has been woven by the master weavers of deception: nafs, Shaytan, hawa, and Dunya, is at the end of the Chapter in the Qur'an entitled the Spider: 'And those who struggle in Our way, we guide them to Our paths.

Verily Allah is with those who perform acts of excellence and beauty.' ... "This path is indeed arduous, and it would appear to one looking at it that to arrive is too difficult for most of us. Let us set out first and then see how long we can last. A Divine wind will blow on your back, your feet will become light, and wondrous fellow wayfarers will show up with sustenance just when you thought you had none. Our success is by Allah, upon Him we place our trust, and to Him we return." -- Hamza Yusuf, Foreword, Agenda to Change Our Condition.

And who among us does all that is required of him in the religion?

It is an undeniable fact that we all have shortcomings; what distinguishes some of us from the others, what raises some of us above the others, is that the successful ones among us are those who repent their sins and ask Allah to forgive them.

It is truly encouraging to know that the door to repentance is always open. Glad tidings, then, to every Muslim who constantly and consistently hastens to repent to Allah and to ask for His forgiveness.

Imam Ghazali argues that just as there is an end to this noble objective there is also a beginning to it, which must be made firm for one to achieve success. He then goes on to expound the fundamentals of this “beginning.” While being concise and to-the-point the manual is laid out in the form of a detailed daily timetable providing the reader strong inspiration and much heart-rending counsel. The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation. One of Imām Ghazālī’s final works, it embodies a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality and can be taken as an introduction to his larger works.
This translation published for the first time with facing Arabic text also includes many notes and transliteration for the supplications contained within.
